I have a 99 xlt extended cab 5.4 tritan , 3.73 rear end that's starting to make some noise. I have 240,000 miles on the truck, 50,000 on rebuilt engine 160,000 on rebuilt tranny. want to keep it , it's really been a great truck , believe it or not , the body is immaculate. I was hoping to find a low mileage rearend that would work, rear brakes are shoes.

Have you tried removing the rear diff cover and replacing the fluid? It may save you some time and money for awhile.

thanks for the reply, yes I did change the fluid but it's still making noise. I removed both rear wheels and I found a little play when I lifted the hubs up and down, I'm gonna try to replace the axle bearings and see how that works.

Replacing the axle bearings is a good idea. With that many miles on it, a good chance that the noise is coming from the bearings.

It would be a good idea to drain the rear-end also and add new gear lube.

Have you check the rear-end lube level to make sure its got plenty in it?
