I manage a field service group and we were driving '97 and '98 E-150's and 250's. One E-250 reached 270K and a E-150 made 307K before we turned them in. At turn in most had around 200K. All had the 5.4L.
Whats more amazing is that not one Vans ever got a transmission service. Our Fleet management company would not approve transmission services. Out of 17 vans we only lost 1 transmission, and that was because the driver got it stuck in a snowbank and burned it up trying to get out.
We did go through a crap load of ignition coils.
Due to the Twin I-beam suspension eating up Front tires, and the ignition coil problems, Upper management decided to replace them with Chevy's.
Time will tell.
My 1997 F150 had 185,000 + miles on it before I got sold it off to get a 2004. It had a 3.8 V6 5 speed I still see it around town and the guy who bought it still tells me he can't beleive I sold it. Next was a 1996 Explorer it had well over 300,000 miles on it when I traded it in. It was an XLT model and had a V6 in it I don't rememeber the size. I traded it because My wife was driveing it to MO twice a month and I didn't want to chance it. Now I have an 2007 Explorer and 2004 F150 and plan on keeping them till they hit a few hundred thousand miles.
My dad has an F-150 that just passed 408,000 miles!!!! He's replaced the starter once and the heater coil six times, but that's it!!! The tie rod end broke two weeks ago and it's the first time that truck's ever left him stranded. I do think maintenance is key. He's faithful about oil changes and tune-ups, but the reliability of this vehicle is pretty remarkable to me. It's a 1988 and he bought it new.
Hi: My 97 5.4L F150 4X4 now has over 275 K, And still runs perfect. No major problems just normal wear & tear stuff. Trany is still great too. By far the best vehicle I've ever owned, though I wish the gas mileage was better.
I am in the process of reviving a '94 F150 that I bought new in July '94. It has been stored for the past three years. It is definitely NOT a high mileage vehicle at 68K original miles ! It is in great shape, and I am looking forward to getting it back on the road. It has some minor mods, including custom suspension using F250 front coils and custom built rear leaf stack to raise ride height about 1.5 inches. That also allowed increased load capacity. I installed K&N air filter system and shorty headers, followed by header back exhaust from magnaflow primarily for improved breathing and slight low end performance increase.
One performance mod has turned into a drawback in our current fuel situation. Before it was stored, I had installed 4.10:1 diff for better low end (I carried and towed some heavy loads). For now, I an offsetting some of that low gear with larger diameter tires, but will have to consider returning to stock gears and tires if I decide to make this my daily ride.
Nice mods on that! Going to larger diameter tires shouldn't affect fuel economy too much with the 4.10's if you don't go with an aggressive tread design. Even if you add 1" in height with the 4.10's you'll still get descent performance and be able to handle heavier loads with ease when the need arises. I don't think the EPA should rate trucks for mileage, I find people buy a truck for what it is, a truck, not an economy vehicle. Compromises aside, you should post up some photos of that baby!
