I have an oil leak in my 1996 F150 4.9 6 cyl. ithinks its just above the distributer. does anyone know if this is a common problem area? maybe around that cover just above the cam?

Sounds like a typical valve-cover gasket leak. Are you losing a significant amount of oil? That will tell you if it is worth replacing or not. If it warrants replacing, it's easy enough to do; buy a manual and give it a shot.

I have the same problem with same engine from a '93 f150 straight 6 4.9L
Leaking as soon as i put oil in
at first couldnt identify where from so I assumed oil pan since the gasket was pushed out from sides of flange on pan
replaced it/ no luck
putting first quart of oil in and the leak was still there
valve cover gasket was dry all the way around and head gasket does not look to be leaking
it's actually leaking from a plate on drivers side of engine block that has a gasket around it and is just above the distributor.
problem is, i dont know what that plate is for, but oil is definitely coming from under that plate

Anyone know what this plate is, what it does or if it can be taken off, resealed and gasketed?

its just a inspection plate for the push rods that is above the dist. but below the head it runs the lenght of the engine i think 5 bolts hold it on, but it does have a gaskit and round seals for around the bolts that hold the cover on not really that difficult to change
