confused Runs Rich

I have a 1985, 302ci Ford 150 extended cab. It was stalling and then the engine was running rich so much so that it would not start. After $800 and replacement of fuel filter, ign moducle, stator, distributor, O2 sensor, and fuel cleaner added I was told that it would start but still runs a little rich. I went to pick up the engine started for 15 seconds flooded out and would not start even after mechanics attempted. The funny thing is before when the engine was running right it purred and then it would take spells of not running right for no apparent reason. Could anyone help?

Hey Man, my '85 F150, 302ci is doing the same thing. Has you got yours straightened out yet? If so, what did it take to fix it? I replaced the plugs, wires, rotor and distrubutor cap today and she fired up fine, then went to smoking like a freight train. Running rough and heavy smell of fuel. I have no idea where to go from here. Someone said the float may be stiking in the carb. Another said water in the fuel. I don't have a clue. Anyone?

Re: Runs Rich

Try replacing your engine temp sensor, not the temp gauge sending unit. I had a motor home with a chev. 454 with the same problem. Just a sugestion.

Re: Runs Rich

I may not be of much help here, but here is my experience. I had an 85 Ranger v-6 that did the same thing. I replaced the carburetor, egr valve, o2 sensor, catalyitic convertors, you name it. Same thing. I ran a compression check and found a few valves were not seating properly. I lived in an apartment and didnt have the place to work on it and couldnt get anyone else too, so I traded it. A few weeks later a mechanic from the Ford dealer bought and had it running good. When it was running you could here a little popping in the exhaust, but it wasnt very loud and you had to listen close to hear it. That year and probably a few before were nightmares. They were trying to cram all the EPA crap on a carbureted engine and it wasnt working out to good. I would start with the compression check and go from there. Save your money on chasing this problem.
