Shock on steering rack

Hi,
I have a 85 F150 4X4, On the steering rack there is a shock attached horizontally. It seems to be loose and maybe even broken. What is the function of this shock? since I don't know if it is still OK and it is very easy to replace what should I replace it with?

Hi Roxy,
It's a steering damper. It stops vibrations & bumps transmitting up through the steering. They're pretty easy to replace, just a bolt or nut either end. There's plenty available after-market; Monroe, KYB, Ryder, etc & usually priced around the $100 mark.
