Lately my '93 F150 has been giving me trouble when I try to start it. I have had the starter replaced after it was recalled and everything else has been checked so I am wondering if it is my fuel pump? A few days ago the engine started sputtering while I was driving so I floored the gas and it regained power and continued running. Today I was driving down the highway and it started to sputter but this time it just died as I was driving. I didn't think I was going to get it started again but luckily after a few minutes if finally started right up. Has anyone else had this problem? I don't like taking my vehicle to a mechanic because they like to overcharge since I am a girl. I want to figure out the problem and fix it myself. I've looked at some fuel pumps online but it seems like there could just be a small part that needs replaced or the whole thing. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

mine has been doing that as well. the only thing is is that it mine will idle very oddly. i was sitting at a stoplight recently and it was idling up and down, up and down. so i pressed the gas when the light turned green, just like i normally do, and it sputtered and then died. so i tried to start it and then it did it again. i started again and it went on like nothing had happened. but it has been doing this for about a week and a half. ive got no ideas other than maybe the air filter. i know its time to get another but i just havent had the time nor money. since i have to work to make money and drive to work it has been a real pain. but yeah if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I had similar problems, lousy performance from the stop light or stop sign when taking off, I would have to kind of baby it from take off. Then the fuel pumps would stay on after I shut the engine off. I found the problem myself and it was the fuel pump relay or fuel pump sending unit, whatever you want to call it. I replaced it and it was like I gave the darn truck a complete tune-up. You can get the relays at autoparts stores. Its one of the cheaper ways to try and eliminate the problem. Also you might want to change the fuel filter. Mine is an 88 F-150 and the relay is on the top driver's side inner fender well. Now later models in the early 90's may have changed the location of the relay. Some trucks may also have a fuel regulator unit and that could be giving problems, but I'm not familiar with those.
