Starter problem maybe?

99 f150 4.6L
Turn the key on the ignition, i can hear the relay click for the power to the strter, i hear the fuel pump, all dash lites and gauges are working but the starter isnt engageing to turn over the motor. Its not loading the battery or the electrical system or anything, seams like a contact somewhere or a relay is sticky. If i turn the key a few times to the strt pos. it finally fires up. I know if i take it in they will just start replacing everthing under the hood, the one time it did it i just wiggled all the relays under the hood and it started the next try, tried that trick the next time and it took me turning the key 5-10 times. Does anybody know if there is a relay under the hood that will csuse this or is it the starter. It has done this maybe 6 or seven times but its becoming more frequent.

cool Re: Starter problem maybe?

The fact the starter relay clicks doesn't mean it is making good contact inside with the battery and starter terminals. Clean all the big wire connections at the relay first. Then to check the relay, take a set of battery cables and put one end on the battery positive and contact the starter side of the relay terminal. If the relay is faulty the engine will turn over. If it is starter related the problem will still be there. Caution, make sure it is out of gear before you do this test!

Good Luck and post back with your results.
