starter problems

Help!
We have a 1984 Ford F-150 4x4 automatic, manufacture date of Sept. 1983. We have replaced the starter four times in as many months. The fly wheel checks out OK. It is as though the bendix is not large enough or the nose of the starter is too long.
The starters make a loud noise then sound as if they are jsut spinning. We are so perplexed!
