When does the EGR valve open?

'88 F150 5.0L 4X4

Can anyone here tell me what are the conditions for the EGR valve to open? Is it strictly an RPM thing, or does the computer decide to open it based on other inputs? TIA

Re: When does the EGR valve open?

On the 88's it's mainly controled by the computer.
RPM's are not a part of it. The engine must be at a certain temp and it will only be opened and stay opened upon acceleration. The valve is usually opened with ported vacuum, but with the aid of the computer it may be opened with manifold vacuum.
