check engine soon keeps appearing. How do I turn it off? What can I do to fix this?
What causes it to appear aside from it needing a tune up?

It lets you know something is wrong with a system on the vehicle. Go to an Autozone and have them scan it to see what code is set.

360ci

If the engine light disappears and returns every couple times you start the vehicle I can't see it being a big concern. As rtg mentioned, get the vehicle scanned for the engine code(s) and post'm here. Autozone should scan the vehicle at no charge.
