2002 ford E250 4.2

I had this van for 6 years, I bought it with a remanufactured transmission,
Transmission worked ok, when driving up hill it would struggle,
I drove it like that for 6 years,

But a couple of weeks ago I was driving it and when I stopped at the red light I heard this pop noise then I tried to move it and will barely move, so I drove it like that for 5 minutes when
The engine died when I was on another red light,
So tried to start the engine and started with no problem then I shifted into gear and it would not move at all I presses on the gas and it made the engine die,
Now it makes the engine die when shifting into gears,

I thought it was the rear end,

But I jacked up the back or the van and shifted into gear and pressed on the gas
And tires do rotate and brake normal, so rear end is not it,

Is it worth trying to repair the transmission ?
What could it be causing the problem?
What ford models are interchangable?
