Finding heater blend door on '97 E250

I have no heat or defrost on my 1997 E-250 van. I'm told its the blending door for the heater core. That a pen or something fell down from the vents on top of the dashboard and jammed it. The A/c is fine, the fan makes fan-like noises and when I switch the heater control on with the engine off I can hear something happening. Like maybe a blending door opening or trying to open IDK.
Is the blending door near or in the heater core box itself? I found that; but its pretty close to the airbag on the passenger side and I'm a little reluctant to muck around there. Would I be better off replacing the thermostat?
