Odd Metal Rattling Noise on E250 - Ford Forums - Mustang Forum, Ford Trucks, Ford Focus and Ford Cars

I have a 96 Ford E250 with about 160,000 miles on it. I have been getting a rattling/metal clanging noise (hard to describe) when I am accelerating over 45mph. When I let off the gas, the noise will stop. This just started and it happens randomly.

I noticed my transmission fluid was low and I just filled that and haven't heard the noise when I drove it for a few minutes after this.....

Any ideas? Thanks in advance,

Could be something like a heatshield , exhaust bracket , or a loose baffle plate but many possible causes and hard to diagnose without hearing it .If it's gone now , great .

Could low transmission fluid have caused this? That is back at a normal level now.

Cant really see why low ATF would cause it , but it's not the first or last time that I couldn't explain why something similar cured a fault . You live and learn with cars every day .

Might of been the torque converter. Some can sound like marbles rattling in a coffee can.

Just as a point of interest , how much ATF did you put in ?

I put in a quart down where I pulled out the dipstick and put it in there with a funnel.

That's not too bad , keep us informed if noise stays away after you get a few miles on the clock ?

If it has a two piece drive shaft, have a look at the carrier bearing, aka "Drive Shaft Center Support"
