My father recently purchased a 89 ford probe 2.2 L for me and my sister. The first day we had it my dad found a nail in the tire, and more importantly the temp gauge wont work. The needle stays at the lowest position at all times and has never moved. So my dad checked under the hood and started to wonder about the whole cooling system. We saw that neither of the fans were spining, and were wondering if they only turned on when needed, We have never seen these running either. So if anyone knows about what the fans do or what might be wrong with my temp gauge please let me know.

The fans are controlled by a thermostat. That being said, mine are currently broken and I need to troubleshoot them this week.
