mad ACT just not right!!

Just got my car back from the shop...got my ACT II in....

It grabs hard, but the thing won't hardly go in gear?? Even when stopped it's a fight to get the car into first, down shifting....forget about it!!!

I know there's a break in period, but is this regular?? Any info helpful!!

no, what's happening is one of two things:
  1. the slave cylinder was not bled properly (if the system was opened), which means that it is not actuating the clutch like it is supposed to
  2. the pedal adjustment is not right. this could mean that the actuating lever is not fully engaging the clutch.

i have an act (note: there is NO such thing as a 'stage II', ACT refers to this kit as the zdss) and the 2nd item was my problem. i still have to get a new threaded bolt in order to fix it properly. it's working now but i want to get this fixed soon myself.

ADjust the clutch pedal.. i'm noticeing that this is a very comon problem with the act install. i just had to fix Seans because of the same problem and damn was it a beiotch to get under that dash to adjust it.

yea i adjusted it out as far as it will go (and you're right it's no fun to get under that dash :-( and I also took out the little rubber pad that stops the clutch when it's fully engaged....that helped a little, but not enogh!!

Based on what I've heard on probetalk it sounds like I need to extend the rod (i think it's called the clutch rod) that connects to the back of the clutch pedal inside the car. Dose anyone know:

1. if this is an easy job??
2. where I can get the part?
3. have instructions on how to do this??

Ryan,

I would go to a clutch shop and ask them how much it costs to adjust the clutch rod in the master cylinder (our clutches use the brake fluid for hydraulics)...

Well what I ended up doing tonight is extending the rod that comes out of the slave cylinder and pushes on the fork about 1/4 inches....and tommorow morning I'm going to add redline and see if one of those to will do it for me...

if not I guess I will end up taking it to a clutch shop....:rolleyes:

I had my clutch installed at the Clutch House on Auburn Blvd. in Citrus Heights - they only charged me $220 for the install - most other shops wanted $300+


When you put fluid in, mix it about 50/50 between Redline MTL and Redline MT-90 - the MT-90 by itself is too thick for our trannies and will cause some notchiness. The best place to buy the stuff is Tognotti's Auto World at the corner of Fulton/El Camino. The cost is about $8 per quart (:eek: ) but it's worth it. Don't use Mobil 1 gear oil, as it contains chemicals that damage our synchros...

Thanks again Dan!! I checked this post about an hour after being disappointed with the notchiness of my car after extending the rod to 3 9/16 inch (if anyone else is going to do this This is as far as it will go without bending the fork to get it in) and adding Red line. But after draining 1 quart of the mt 90 and adding MTL...wow!!! Smooth!!

The added length of the rod is working great!! But I've got a question:

I saw on PT someone was concerned that adding length to this rod would keep the throwout bearing spinning all the time and ruin it....what do you (or anybody else) think??

I don't know were I'd be without PT and this great forum :eek: This rookie to cars is learning lots!! Thanks to all who have replied to my many posts (if they're getting to be too many, just let me know and I'll ease up on the posts)

welp.. you could never post to much. :D we're here to help.


as for adding the length to the rod causing the throw out bearing to constintly spin. that all depends on how long the rod was made. since it seems that the act clutch's pressure plate doesn't stand out as far as the stock one if you just added enough to make the clutch work. i believe that it won't do any premature damage to the throwout bearing.
