okay, i am looking at getting a 93 probe GT(5 sp) with 117,000 on the drivetrain. I dont have a lot of info about the probe and was hoping you guys can help me out.
The car is in good shape, with good handling and crisp shifting.
Are there any problems that this year/model is known for.
what should i look for when i look at it?
How many miles on the avg is this model known to go for?
Is it possible to use 87 grade fuel without major downgrade in power?
whats a good price fo the car. He wants $2200.
any info would be appreciated.
Well, 93-94 and early 95 models have brake caliper problems, they tend to lock up. If their new ones on the car you shouldn't have a problem. The interior door panels on 93-94 models seperate from the doors. But can be replaced by 95-97 models. The distributor will go out eventually. If you hear a squealing noise that sounds like a loose belt, but the belt is tight. That means the a/c compressor is going. Car should get any where from 18-20mpg in city and 25-29 on the highway.
The GT model has a knock sensor in case the octane level is to low. But, read this thread about octane levels. Experts knock premium gasoline....
$2200 is a good price for the car.

Also, ask when the timing belt was changed. If it hasn't been done and you buy the car. It's not a bad idea to go ahead a change the water pump when replacing the belt.

one thing is that i smell a little oil burning. There is no leaks that i can see with a bare eye, but it almost seems like its dripping on the manifold somewhere... any ideas?
It's either your valve cover gasket, or the head gasket leaking. Damn, that was something else I wanted to warn you about. Hows the interior ?

That, I don't know. I ended up buying a used motor. Something else while we're on the subject. Every now and then you'll here the lifters tapping. But, it's normal for that engine.

You might also want to be warned the well known oil pump issue. If you replace the timing belt and water pump, go ahead and replace the oil pump at the same time. The HLA Lifters are annoying. They make a fast ticking sound.
