Greetings today I started my 1996 SE Ford Probe with 155k miles on it and immediately heard a loud "thump-thump" sound from my engine area and then I found my power steering was out. I was able to drive home but it was like driving an old army two and a half ton truck.

I dont hear anything else coming from the engine area though so it was if a belt broke maybe?

Does anyone have any ideas on what exactly went out? I do not know where to look to check the belt. I do not kno much about cars in general to be honest.

Also I wont have any money for a week or so to get it repaired/buy the part ... is it dangerous for me to drive aside from the extra strength to steer? (My complete steering wont go out will it?)

I would think it is a serpentine belt,(one belt drives everything), You won't loose all your steering, but it's not the safest thing to drive w/o it.

I just checked and found that I am missing the large flat belt to the left of the engine as your facing it (that runs up and down) so I imagine that is the serpentine belt.
