Thermostat/cooling problem
Been reviewing threads looking to see if my problem is similar to other Probe owners. Mine is a 95 V6 w/ 125K on it, and this overheating problem has happened 4 separate times thoughout it's life. Basically, the temp guage is normal until the cooling fans kick on while I'm idleing, at which time the temp guage slowly moves up and up. In the past, the guage would return to normal when the fan would kick off after I reached 2nd or 3rd gear. I've taken it to the dealer all previous occasions and I got a different answer every time. Pressure tests on the coolant system come back negative, thermostat checks out (but they replace it anyway), finally found a crack in the radiator one time at Jiffy Lube, had it replaced and the problem stopped for a while, but it's happening again. My coolant was low - so I filled it up with water hoping to see a leak, but nothing. I ran the engine for 15 mintues, maybe 4 drops of water/coolant on the garage floor, had to turn off the engine as it started to overheat. Guess I'm just frustrated since I feel like this problem has never truely been fixed. Any ideas? Some friends say I should use a black light to look for leaking coolant, and that I should replace the thermostat. The radiator doesn't have more than 20K on it so I don't think that's the problem. Just curious if anyone else has had a recurring problem with the thermostat or coolant system.
thanks,
Mark.
