You have to buy a scanner for the '96 Probe, or pay someone else to scan it for you (a shop/dealership).

Not sure on the '90 Stang.
Check in their forum.

You can buy the scanner for both OBDII engines or for the probe jump the TEN pin and the GND pin with a paper clip, turn the key to ignition on with out cranking the car that read the flashes. This will determine you trouble code(s). Then look up the codes and you know what's wrong.:s5

Jumping the TEN pin and GND WILL NOT WORK on a 96 Probe. That is the problem with OBDII cars, there is no easy way to get the codes.

The only way to get the codes on the 96-97 is with the OBD II scanner.

The OBD-II scanning software, decoder and cable are availabe from www.obd-2.com for $122. You can use it with your home computer, or if you have a laptop, you can actually drive with it and datalog under various driving conditions for analysis of MAF, Fuel Trim, O2 sensor, and other signals.

Another advantage, if you get a CEL, you can reset the fault tables to get rid of the CEL, but retain the calibrations your PCM has stored (unlike disconnecting the battery).

HTH,
Bill
