Question Tune Up And Gas Mileage?

I just bought a 1991 LX with 95K miles. It's in great shape, runs pretty good, and everything works. I've been driving long distance with it to work and been getting about 24 - 25 MPG. Is this normal? What are you guys getting for gas mileage?

I'm thinking about doing a tune up: plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and an oil change. What should the plugs be gapped at? And how hard is it to do a tune up on the LX? Are any of the plugs hard to get to? What about the oil filter? It looks as though it might be tough to get at or maybe spill some oil taking it out. Can anyone help me out?

i spill a little but of oil sometimes. all of the plugs are easy to get to. the new plugs will be pre gapped to the correct measurement, but the correct gap will be listed on your underhood information sticker.

that is decent gas mileage, seeing as i only get 29 on the freeway and i have an underdrive pulley and msd coil which help.

From the factory, the 3.0L Probe was rated 19/26, about the same as modern cars with the same engine size. So you are doing pretty good. Right now during the winter I get around 17 per mile in town, due to warming up the car. But during the summertime I average around 19-21 depending on my driving habits. The oil filter you can reach from over the engine if you are good at bending your arms. There is room underneath as well but I hate getting underneath.

The plugs are easy to get to, getting them out might be a different story. ALso, the tune up sounds like a good idea especially if you have not done that yet since you've bought it.. no telling how long the previous owner went without maintaning it..

Thumbs up

Thanks for the help, guys. I'll probably do the tune up this weekend, as long as it's not too cold. The guy who owned it before me used it to go back and forth to school. I live in Columbus, OH and now commute to work 73 miles one way to Dayton, so that's why I bought it. It's exactly like the one I sold my father 6 years ago. Same color, options, everything. His has 107K miles and still going strong, but with my driving, I will eclipse that in no time. The previous owner claims he kept up with maintanence and even used Mobil 1 oil, which I plan to do as well. The car's in great shape, and I only paid $1800 for it. After the tune up, hopefully it will run even better and get some better gas mileage. Thanks again for the help!
