MORE than 80,000 Victorian motorists have been booked for exceeding new 50kph speed limits since they were introduced a year ago. Those exceeding the new limit accounted for 9.5 per cent of all speeding offences, raising $9 million in fines for the state government.
Transport Minister Peter Batchelor released the figures today, saying the 50kph limit for built-up areas had already reduced road trauma.
"Preliminary results show that the level of crashes, serious crashes, has reduced by about 10 per cent in the first half of the reporting period," he said.
Mr Batchelor said an independent analysis of the new speed limit would be undertaken to assess its overall impact.
But he said the new default limit was permanent, and a new publicity campaign would be undertaken to remind drivers of the law.
"It's very simple," Mr Batchelor said.
"As in the past with the 60kph default speed limit, under the new arrangements, if there is no sign in a built up area, in a residential area, the speed limit is 50kph, and people have to abide by that."

They've got 30k speed limits in brisbane at the moment in some areas, I had a school kid on a bike FLY by us when I was in an M5! I hope it doesn't extend to all public streets in the future.

It's a governement conspiracy to phase out cars as we know it. Just like working at maccas, if they don't want you there they will, instead of sacking you just shorten your hours os much that you leave voluntarily as you are not getting enough hours. Same applies here, put the speed down so much that you see poeple half your age going quicker than you and you realsie, why soend 50k on a car when i can spend 500bucks on a good pushy?
*note: This is only speculation.
