I'm new to this forum peeps so bare with me.

Its a sin I know but I dont own a haynes manual for my 1997 1.4 Escort freedom.

I'm smelling fuel through the vents when I rev the engine. Everybody is saying check the fuel hose thats going in to the engine. Thins is I dont know how. Can someone please explain. I know I'm asking the impossible.

look for the fuel leak
if you smell fuel inside the car when driving theres a fuel leak.
if its only at idle stand still you car would just be runing extremely rich.
what you wana do is get a clean pair of clear saftey gogles and start the engine and just look for fuel, odds are by the time it would drip to the ground it will evoprate, so you gotta find it from its source.
find the fuel rail and trace the lines back from there till you reach the fuel tank, then trace all other lines back to the engine.
look at the fuel injectors any dripping?

Its seems to be when its idle. I think it is running to rich. How would I stop it running so rich?

assuming you have done a THROUGOUH visual check the next two steps are simple
being its a 1997 youve got two things at your advantage
it has odbII is there any check engine lights..... very easy to read!!
next up there are fuel pressure testers out there by the dozen, (WHICH IS GONA REQUIRE A MANUAL)
if bolth tests pass well
id say either your not burning the excess fuel or the motor is being forced to pump more fuel in.
how are the plugs wires filters etc.....

if your engine was being forced to run that way the o2 sensor would pickup on it, throwing a error code.....or if the o2 was shot it would throw a code as well. a blown tps maf or sumthing like that dosent ususally cause this but it can.
theres not much beyond this unles your exhaust is messed up before the cat.
id still be looking for a leak.
