ADSL Just Connected

I'm new to this broadband thing, having been on Dialup since 97. I only went the 256/64 connection as it seems to be good for downloading the occassional file and receiving emails quick and save me a shit load on phone calls. But I did a test this afternoon on a 10mb file and it took about 4 minutes to come down. Approximatley. I looked at the k per second and it was getting 27 to 30 k. Which is certainly quicker than my average of 4 on dialup. Does 27k sound slow for a 256 k connection, or about right.

Thanks in advance

Re: ADSL Just Connected

I just went with Ozemail. I figure after what i pay on call costs, i'm gonna almost cover the extra from BB. They had some pretty good deals.

Re: ADSL Just Connected

oh your gonna love broad band. i changed over about 6 months ago after figuring all the times i dial up a month and the plan itself it would be cheaper to pay for BB and it is. phone bills about $60 a month now instead of over $150 so even on BB im still saving $$ every month...not that i actually see the money i save though!

The 256 means 256 kilobit which basically equals to 25kilobytes. So anything above 25k a second is a bonus!

Most people think that internet connections are in bytes...but they are actually bits. This is why 56k modems go at 5k a second :)

Incidently, you will find that HTML and FTP downloads will usually max out at 25k or so, but if you use Kazzaa or any other filesharing tools it depends on the person who your recieving the file from - so is often slow.

Enjoy broadband!

(Im upgrading to 1500 next month YAY! )

Re: ADSL Just Connected

I love optus cable, so far the highest I've seen is over 900 kilobytes when I went nuts on Kazza one day. Now that was REALLY moving!!! Seems optus is only limited by the server sending it out!

Re: ADSL Just Connected

If your interested guys OzForces have just reduced their pricing. You can now get 256mb adsl for $59 a month with unlimited downloads. Not bad.

Re: ADSL Just Connected

Yea Broadband rules, I have ADSL but Back in Black has Cable at the and he can get up to 10megabit with his ISP but where i live i can only get ADSL 256/128, but to be honest its not that bad, people at my school always tell me how shit it is but really I still thnk its quite cool, though I wouldnt complain if my isp upped the speed a bit

Re: ADSL Just Connected

Thanks Blueraven. I didn't know that. So even on my Dialup before when i was getting in good times around the 5, i was actually getting th correct speed. So seems all is good. Thanks for info.

For me, anything about 6 k is a bonus now. I downloaded every movie from AU Falcon on my 56k connection. It was painful. At least now it will be 5 times less painful than before. Thankgod for broadband

Wow 1500 k connection. Ahh, i remember the days when 28k was the best.

Already Daveway i love this Connection. I've just gotta get used to the idea of not having to dialup. Just turn it on, and away we go.

Re: ADSL Just Connected

My plan is $50 big ones for 12 gig a month download. I think thats pretty good. Considering i was paying $30 for 56k unlimited time on a roll over plan.

Its a whole new world. Ans I'm on the "Virgin to Broadband Plan" Now what will i look at next.
