Well myself and a colleague were on a business trip to Tokyo at the time to set up and configure a few servers. In fact we arrived in Tokyo on Sept 11, but remember that we are 1 day ahead of the Yanks. There was a typhoon blowing when we arrived and we almost didn't make it from the taxi to the front door of our building. But I digress...
The next morning, Wed, Sept 12, my colleague met me outside my door and asked if I've been watching the news the night before or that morning. I hadn't because I was tired from the flight and the day at the office so I just went to bed after returning to my room. So he picked up the complimentary copy of USA Today and handed it to me. On the front page there was a photo of the twin towers with smoke billowing out of them. The caption said it was a still from the video footage taken. It took me about 5 reads of the article for it to sink in. I wish I'd kept that newspaper now. Then in the office when I'd get time I'd check the news sites for updates, and in the hotel each night and morning I'd be glued to the CNN channel.
On the way home from Tokyo I had to visit China for 2 days to talk to their network guys about stuff and I was terrified. I just wanted to get home. My colleague had to visit Korea to speak to their network guys and then go on to Cary, North Carolina, USA where our HQ is but needless to say, that part of his trip was cancelled.
Tell you what, I was glad when I touched down back in Sydney!
