Re: annother what is this good thread (PC ADVICE)

My advice at the moment is to hold off buying a new system for a while, as big upgrades in the computer industry change prices heaps (and there's gunna be a big one, I've just forgotten the name right now), but trust me, hold out

Re: annother what is this good thread (PC ADVICE)

First there's the BTX form factor replacing the current ATX setup - this is all about how motherboards are set out, their size, positioning of expansion slots. Another is the PCI bus being updated to the new PCI express. There will be a special 16x PCI Express slot for graphics cards to replace the 8x AGP slot. These are tipped to be out before the end of the year. Since the specs metioned aren't that high end, you may as well get a PC now if you don't want to wait as these newer changes will probably cost more initially. But in the next year or 2 you may need to replace the case, motherboard, graphics card if you want to get new stuff. It's up to you.

Also dual layer DVD burners will be available later this year. They are just starting to pop up at hardware manufacturer's stands at major computer shows - but aren't for sale yet. So provided you have the right type of DVD-R media, you'll be able to copy a whole DVD movie on one disc to about 8.3GB or perhaps a little more rather than the current 4.3GB. Alot of 2 hour movies go over 5GB. The 8MB cache is the better option too on the HDD

Videocard: Albatron 128MB GeForce FX5200 With D-Sub, TV out and DVI $99.00
Couldnt help noticing that that is a very average videocard. I dont know how demanding your video editing applicaiotns are but maybe you should look at a decnt cost- effective videocard upgrade too.

The ATI Radeon 9600XT that mad_wog picked is very good value beating the nvidia product on most benchmark tests.

And as for the upgrading dilema ive given up. Theres ALWAYS something "groundbreaking" with computers "just around the corner" so ill just take whatevers best when i have the money.

Dont forget you can always just overclock when your comp gets abit too slow for your tastes.
