Been thinking of getting a smaller car. Mainly for the handling/economy. And I have come to the realisation that I dont need all the space in my current vehicle (though I would never sell it). Have been looking at the corolla ke 20 coupes mainly. Any one know anything about them?
Like how do they handle? How much for a real nice one? Is it a tight squeeze driving them (me 5ft. 10, 85kg)? How quick are they? Are they good on fuel? Problem areas? Etc, you get the idea.
Would I be able to fit a gas tank where the petrol tank is and run straight LPG?
Would it be hard to get an sr20 or fj20 in there?
I know ford forums is not the best place to ask these questions, but when I go to find a early corolla forum all I find is ricer crap. Mainly dudes doing up 1985 corollas, um no thanks.
Re: Anyone know anything about KE 20 Corolla Coupes?
'78 corolla sedan
To put it in perspective - if you can beat an excel at the lights, you are having a really really good day.
Fantastic car....really light steering for manual, great on fuel... But like I said, not only is it really really slow - but be prepared to yell to have a conversation at 100kmh (and try and not be afraid that the virbration will make the panels fall off)
Re: Anyone know anything about KE 20 Corolla Coupes?
Jesus this isnt sounding too good at all. I thought they would be at least average in quickness (due to the lightweight). And yeah ride comfort/minimal noise at 100 is a big consideration for me, so thats not looking too good either.
So this pretty much rules out a stock motor ke 20. I cant stand cars that have really below average power (I recon its downright dangerous for one thing).
Might have to look at one that has already been converted to a sr20det or fj20et already. You would think that they would get up and boogie in a big way.
For some reason I think these cars would be a lot of fun to drive. Like a go cart or something.
Re: Anyone know anything about KE 20 Corolla Coupes?
You'd need a pre-worked corolla to do that... they lean a lot through corners - but its fun to drive in its own way. The are slow enough that you are constantly fanging it... which you can't do it most cars without being dangerous...
I have heard though that with a little work (like the aforementioned sr20det) these cars will fly...like you said, they are so light! I've heard of many <10 corollas
Re: Anyone know anything about KE 20 Corolla Coupes?
Why dont you just buy a SR20 - the Pulsar N14s go for around 5000-7000 these days, not a bad car. N15s have held their resale pretty well, which is the bad news and are around 13000-15000, last of the SR20s, 1999 model. Putting that in perspective you can get a 2001 Maxima for about 16800 - whole lot more car for only a couple of grand more - I know off topic, but thats the problem Im having atm.
Re: Anyone know anything about KE 20 Corolla Coupes?
Um sorry mate, I could never even consider the cars you have suggested. Mainly due to the front wheel drive, but also a few other factors too. But thanks for the suggestion anyway.
I like the 70's corollas because they look cool to me (and they are rwd). They remind me of mazda rx-3's and LJ Toranas. And they seem like a good car to achieve good straight line speed and good cornering.
Re: Anyone know anything about KE 20 Corolla Coupes?
Oh yeah and if anyone has pics of any 70's corolla coupes that would be great.
I think there is another type of 70's corolla coupe I am interested in called a cs or something. You see them all the time in 4 door form but only occasionally in 2 door. I think they are a later model than the ke20.
If anyone has any pics and/or info on this car it would be cool.

Yeah thanks for your insight Steffo....
You also forgot that the GTiR is AWD.
Other than that, you'll be spending a bit of money trying to put an Sr20 in an old banger just to have Rwd - is it really worth it in this case ? If its such an issue, buy a Silvia !
