Athlon XP

Hey I was wondering what some of my fellow computer types think about the Performance Rating scheme devised by AMD for their athlon XP processors.
For example:
an Athlon XP 1800+ is actually a 1533Mhz cpu that is rated to equal or better the performance of a 1.8ghz Pentium 4

I think it has been used before with limited sucess, but this time with the grunt to match the tag it should be an success.
any other comments?

Cyrix/IBM used to do that when they were competing with the early pentiums. As far as i know it was a success.

Yeah I've only seen a small amount on the new "Qauntispeed" AMD chips. They are able to perform several instructions/CLK resulting in lower MGHz for while increasing performance.

I'm not sure of the benefits if you don't use WindowsXP though.

I'll be looking seriously at one of these.

I doubt the windows XP benefits too, just like I doubt the P4 makes the internet better

If i hadn't just gone to a 1.2 gig athlon, i would be looking at one for sure, will probably look at one early next year..
That or *drool* SMP athlon!! :D

See if you can count the seconds it takes to burn out a new AMD without a heatsink!! Actually it will even be unstable if it's not seated properly or does'nt have heatsink paste...

www.tomshardware.com have a video of them doing this
But i have been led to believe that this happened to the cyrix CPU's when they were in general use, not due to improperly mounted heatsinks, if I am wrong, I apologize. :o
