Arrow Att - Computer Nerds - Need Help With Icq!

Well if youve got this far, you obviously want to help so heres my problem:

I have had icq and has been working fine for over a year. but now when i load internet explorer, icq doesnt load/open/work.

I have the flower button thing down the bottom of my screen but constantly has 6 red petals and 2 green ones. when i clik on it nothing happens, should bring up the icq menu. also icq surf doesnt work- not that ive ever used it.

Do i have a virus or something?

checked in the task manager and it says that icq is running at 5756K

Any help would be appreciated as I have a lot of stirring to do to XA coupe and a few others. Also been doing housework cos im soooooo bored and cant chat.

PLEASE HELP:cussing: COS ITS getting me pretty maDDD

I've had ICQ for just over a year as well, from 99b to 2001b Alpha. Never had a problem. BUT:
The 2green/6red petals means that ICQ is connecting to the ICQ server.
Possible solutions:
1) Check ICQ settings. Go ICQ menu -> Preferences -> Connections -> Server tab -> Auto Configure will auto configure the connection settings.
2) Reinstall ICQ.
3) Reinstall Internet Explorer.
4) Use Netscape.
5) If all else fails, and you desperately need ICQ, there is a web-based version of ICQ. Go to http://www.icq.com/icqwebbie/.

The following is NOT, repeat NOT an option:
Use MSN Messenger

Hope this helps :-)

How many people do you have on icq?? if its not many then its easier to uninstall it and reinstall ... but if you have heaps it s a pain.... but I am looking for a backup program for myself so I will send it to you if I find one .. what version of icq... maybe you could upgrade it

Easy way to back up ICQ...

Go to C:\Program Files\ICQ\ and copy the folder for the version of ICQ, eg C:\Program Files\ICQ\2001a or 2000b or 99b etc to a different folder.

This folder conatins all your settings and contacts. Just put back in the C:\Program Files\ICQ\ folder when you reinstall. If you install a later version, just run the ICQ Database converter.

This allows you to change computers or reformat your hard drive (Solution #6) and keep all of your old message history and contacts.

Helpful as ever,

this is exactly why msn messenger is so much better than icq. the contact list on msn messenger is web-based so as long as their server is up, which it is anyway.

i've been using icq for years (hell, my icq number's 5321761 - only 7 digits) and it's become such a lard-arsed program. it used to be fairly small, with not too many features, didn't screw up... nothing's like it used to be with computers.

the latest version of ICQ does retain your contact list on the web for you, just like MSN, AOL and Yahoo instant messengers

But yes ICQ has become bloated, just like MSN messenger is beginning to be, all due to the fact we don't have only small reserves of HDD space anymore so they can add all these "useful" features without fear of people not using them cos of limited HDD space

oh another thing...
seeing you're running win xp, what's it like? i've heard it's got more bugs than you could poke a stick at - more than win 95 had when it came out, and that was shocking as it was...

i mean, i had lots of issues with win me so i went back to win 98 se but would you say it's worth upgrading? i'm running a P3 866 with 384 megs or ram (probably will get more very soon) and i can't say i'm happy with win 98 se. STILL too many bugs for my liking...

so, xp or no xp?

I have found XP to be extremely stable and I have noticed no bugs whatsoever, I have been running it for over 2 months now.

Depending on what you are running, if windows 2000, the upgrade is a good one because it has greater compatibility with all software than win2k did.
If you are running windows 98 and are happy with what it is doing for you there isn't that great a need for an upgrade, but if you are running windows Me, I question why you are doing it, it takes a reasonably stable 98 and throws stability down the drain.

Overall I would reccomend an upgrade no matter what you are running though, it all depends on your budget, cos it certainly isn't cheap.
