Well today I walked into the bosses office and asked him why I was on the same wage as a 17 year old kid. I am 19 and work in a printing factory. I am paid by a labour Hire company who shall remain nameless. I told the boss i am 19 and on 11.06 an hour. He goes "What?! Since when?" "Since I started 6 months ago boss." "What the %@#$!!"
He then rang my labour hire agency and asked them why I was being paid a 17 year olds wages ($11.06) when I should be on a 19 year olds wage of $14 an hour. They apoligised and told him that what they owe me will be paid into my bank account next week.
For 6 months they underpaid me! Now they have to pay it all back!! BWAHAHAHAHA!!
They owe me (rough calculations) beween $1700 and $2400!
Just a warning to all you younger people. Always ask questions if you think you are being exploited!!
Thank god i did!
$2000 is a shipload of money that will now help me buy a EL Fairmont Ghia even faster than I originally thought!
Well actually, I got some money from my old work last pay day, despite finishing before christmas, be interesting to see if it comes again on Thursday.
Trying to get work at the motor show, and then I'm joining the army reserve after that, so i should have 8-9 grand or some come my 18th birthday and it's all going to a car.
Usually award based employees (and your employer is required to make a copy of your award available to you so you can always check your conditions of employment) receive a percentage of an "adult" wage until they turn 21. So you should get an increase every birthday.
Always check your pay slip carefully as pay office people are human and mistakes can be made.
Unfortunately BA GT-HO much of that back pay will disappear in tax as it will place you in a much higher tax bracket for the pay in which it is paid. To minimise the impact of this ask your employer whether they can pay it to you over a couple of pays.
Also make sure that they pay the 9% superannuation levy on the back pay as well.
Each pay slip I get from work says: 19 years casual 19/02/82. That's right I'm actually 20. Although I know they are actually paying me 20 year old rates so it's all good.
At least you don't work in retail other wise your story would have been a sad one. Poeple in retail positions get ripped off blind and there is no one to protect them.
My G/F is 2nd in command at a Bra selling store and gets nothing more for the position than a normal full timer. She's expected to work 1 hour a day more and doesn't get payed for it. No overtime or penatly rates on sat or sunday. Some times she works 12 hours straight and gets nothing more than normal pay for those 12 hours. She's not salary and doesn't get a bonus.
IT's F#$ked up. If I ever see her state boss in person his face will connect with my elbow. (Before you jump up and down he does make the rules about there pay and is directly responcible for this crap) They manage to break rules regarding award rates by getting them to sign a training contract so in 2 years time she's got a tafe qualification in management. Good I here you say? Well they come and see her about the course once every 2 months and give her one sheet of paper to fill out and thats it. It's a crock of shit. Problem being she loves the people she works with and likes the job so she stays there! Drives me crazy I tells ya.
