Hey,
Godfrey is the one and only Icon of Newcastle Uni. Often referred to as "the beast" or "god", he was a Classics Professor, retired in 1992. Built the student union - and many other things on campus - through own funds and fundrising. The campus pub was named the Godfrey Tanner Bar after him. He was my main academic influence. He taught me more than all my courses, even though I've never studied classics. I'm far from alone on that one - the Cathedral overflowed. Godfrey was the last champion of student rights in Newcastle Uni - which is why there was nearly a punch-on at the wake. We left the corporate ****s inside to score their points, half-inched many a bottle of red and got pissed on the steps of University house (well, except me of course). Hell, they didn't even provide proper house red for the occasion.
An example of his influence - His office was in the Engineering Department. About 4 or 5 years ago they went to move him back to the Classics department (he retired in '92), and the Engineering students/staff/fraternity kicked up such a stink that the Uni allowed him to keep the office in Engineering, and provided him with another in Classics. Given how tight Uni budgets are, to provide a retired Professor with two complete offices gives you some idea of his status.
He will rest in peace - hes already arguing philosophy with god, glass of house red in hand. I just wish I could listen in.
