Thumbs up AU Refinement

On the weekend while going car searching with a friend who wants to sell his Regency EL for an AU1 upgrade/ AU2 he pointed out how much more refined the AU1upgrade was compared to his EL.

Although i'm slowly changing him, he isn't really a car nut. I reckon this proves that the AU is a fine car, except the shape was hard to get use to. In my opinion the AU's didn't have a refinement problem, although i do admit the AU2 is even quieter.

Having driven both I can honestly say they're brilliant cars to drive. The interior styling I didn't mind at all on AU, while AUII is even better. AUII exterior styling looks much better than AU though.

define what you mean by refinement problem?

In my opinion they do but not too bad when you consider the money being asked.

Manual cars have a huge refinement problem in the drive train including the diff. They also tend to have refinement issues in the dash where temperature changes cause loud plastic movement sounds. Door rubbing and seat noises are also very common on Au.

Moving form the EF/EL interior I never had anywhere near the movement the Au has in the dash area. Plastic texture was also an issue on series one cars.

But when you consider the product in it's whole it is very good value for money for quality. In isolation there are some aspects that were a backward step from the EL

Sorry, i'd have to disagree with you there Gary.

The AU's are a major step BACKWARD from the EL in terms of refinement.

AU's clunk and rattle lots more than ELs. at work i have driven HEAPS of AU1/11 and ELs.. The EL proves itself to be a much more refined car, less rattles, less clunks and thumps.

The AUs have a major problem with heat causing the plastic to creak and groan. The adjustable seat belt mounting anchors rattle their head off, and those bastard door seals chatter like a mad woman. (Sorry Girls :s6: )

I have driven El's with 100+ kms on them and they are still as tight, and as quiet as the day they left the showroom.

However, AU's with 50+kms are loose and rattly like buggery.. they are a really bad car.

I guess the AV will rectify alot of this with the new dash, hopefully ford have addressed this issue.. However the chattery door seals and clunks probably wont be addressed because its the same chassis, just a facelift model..

That makes me wary of buying an AV, or weather to wait until the 2005 falc.

I had a EL2 XR and I've got to say that my AU2 XR sh$ts on it. No rattles, less road noise, less problems, all around a hugh improvement over my last one.

I'm very happy with my AU. :s5

Jay,
I can honestly say after driving AU1's and AU2's from work etc, that there a cut above than the EF-EL's. While the E's are damn good it seems the AU's from what i feel are a whole lot tighter and refined. Even from the way the doors shut the AU's have that quality feel to them.
I believe what you say as i know a number of people who say the AU's aren't as good as EL's. Perhaps it's just luck of the cars.
Well it's good to exchange ideas anyway.

I have owned a EL, AU and AU II all XR8's and i would have to say they have improved each time. AU II is by far the best and would say the biggest jump in quality betwwen the three

They sure are when they are new.. but give them time!

As soon as the K's start to climb, that quality feel falls!

What I meant, was that say at 100,000kms the EF/ELs are a so much better car than the AU is at the same kilometres.

While the AU's are still new (less than 50k - more on some cars) they are still pretty good!

Ahh i c, yeah must say all the AU's i've been in are less than 100k. I've been in an AU1 upgrade wagon that has done over 80k and it felt pretty tight.
