I usually think that stock stuff is crap and that you have to go aftermarket with your car stereo (ie. Alpine). But after hearing the Premium sound system in the AU's I would be more than happy with that! It sounds great IMHO. Definently the First option to tick!

Theiy're Pioneer speakers, not sure on the amp or head unit though?

I haven't felt the need to upgrade the components yet, perhaps if my music blows bits I'll go beefier. Been very happy with it stock, one thing Ford definitely did the right way!

Standard stereo package: (In an AUII TE50)
Front and back are 5 x 7 (i think) pioneer paper cone ... Rears are 2 way, fronts have small pioneer tweeters on the pillar. No amps other than in the head unit.
I have replaced the front with Clarion 6" spilts and the rears with Alpines (as they make 5 x 7") and 2 clarion amps and kicker 12" sub
sounds nice...
found the best and neatest place to mount the amps is under the front seats, and run wiring under the carpet .

I spent a few hours researching on the web.... and given the price and package we get... I think we're getting a slightly different (as in the speaker package) version of the Mach 460 stereo found in the Mustang.

The head unit looks very similar (just different plastics on the front) and has all the features (compression etc) that I've heard Venom etc talk about. Upgrade price was about CAN$900 in canada (which used to be 1 for 1 with the aussie dollar) or US$350 in the USA.

Anyone have any other theories ?

The premium system does have an amp, sits in the boot on the right side. Subwoofer is an 8" free air Pioneer job. It's an 11 component system all up. Speakers are located on the parcel shelf, front door pods and A pillar.

Venom S, I'm sure that when we checked the rear speakers in your XR (premium sound) at Eastern Creek we found that they where the same as you get in a standard AU. The diff is that you get a higher powered system and an 8" sub. (also splits at the front rather than 2 ways in the doors). I don't think the splits come with crossovers either, just an inline capacitor.

Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with the premium sound package. However I don't like the sound of Paper Drivers. Check out any OEM manufacturer and you will find paper drivers at their entry level. By the way the Premium Sound H/U produces 250 watts peak power which equates to approx 20 wrms (per channel).
