Just thought I'd throw this one into the mix:

Was reading the BA brochure I picked up yesterday from the local Ford dealer, and came accross this piece of text on the page about Safety - "... a fuel tank mounted ahead of the rear axle."

Sounds like FoMoCoAus wants to export to the US?

The fuel tank is there for other reason then just export, one reason why its in the safety section. others most likely reasons would be weight distbution, aerodynamics, and the sizes of the new exhaust & catalytic converters. I believe there was more info on it in one of ford safety improvements report on FoMoCo home site some time ago
