BAC for P platers set to become 0.00

No BS, here's an official news release from the RTA website:

Quote:
Zero alcohol for young drivers

29-04-2004

A zero blood alcohol limit for all drivers holding learner and provisional licences will apply from next Monday May 3.

The Minister for Roads, Carl Scully, said the new law will remove any confusion for novice drivers about how much alcohol they can drink while progressing through the NSW graduated licensing scheme.

“At last year’s Alcohol Abuse Summit, there was widespread support for a reduction of the current .02 blood alcohol limit to zero for novice drivers,” Mr Scully said.

“With more than 190,000 new drivers on the roads this year, the NSW Government is sending a clear, zero tolerance message that alcohol and driving do not mix.

“Drink driving remains a major problem on NSW roads and was a factor in 130 deaths in 2002.

“Novice drivers represented 12 per cent of drink drivers involved in fatal road accidents that year.”

Mr Scully said Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory had already adopted a zero blood alcohol limit for novice drivers.

“The new rules apply to anyone holding a learner or provisional P1 or P2 licence, regardless of age.

“The zero blood alcohol limit for young drivers is one of a range of measures introduced by the NSW Government targeting drink driving,” Mr Scully said.

“Other recent initiatives include a ban on drinking alcohol while in control of a motor vehicle or motorbike, and the introduction of a new sentencing option for NSW magistrates includes a specialised in-car breathalyser - known as an interlock device.”

Re: BAC for P platers set to become 0.00

I wonder how many of those fatal crashes had novice drivers with a BAC of over 0.05 ?

So what about medication which registers a low blood alcohol limit ?

Idiots.

Lucky I have my full licence.

yeah get with the times. this should have been done years ago!!
dont see any point complaining about since half the country already has it. if medication is an issue then you probably shouldnt be driving anyways.

Who cares, one beer puts you over the limit anyway, having it at 0.02 was just stupid because it gave you the false impression you could have one beer safely.

Some could say the same thing with speed tollerances ?

Okay, I didnt know it was 0 in other states.

0.02 wasnt so you could have one beer, 0.02 was supposed to allow for the effects of some forms of medication on your breath. Now some people will probably get pulled back to the police station because the alcholizer detects cough syrup.

Here, here, it's been like this in Vic for a while, and like you say it should have been brought in ages ago, Nation wide.
I see no problem introducing this law what so ever.

Re: BAC for P platers set to become 0.00

Should have been ages ago. I am a P-Plater and it is of no worry to me that it is 0.00. I am not stupid enough to drive after I have had a couple of drinks. If I know I am going to have some, there is no way I plan to drive.
