Backwards Radar?

I've seen this a few times, but I keep forgetting to ask about it,
Basically, I have driven past police cars parked on the side of the road and the driver has had the hand held radar sticking out the window pointing backwards, meaning that he can't really see you, he's obviously using the mirrors on his car and just having a 'rough guess' at getting the radar ligned up on your car.
I've only ever seen it on open, virtually deserted roads (mainly between Mildura and Bendigo) and very late at night, so he's really on going on your headlights aswell.
What would be the legalities of that? I was always under the assumption that they had to line it up on your front registration plate?
Or have things changed?

Re: Backwards Radar?

dunno i guess if its a radar then it doesnt matter where it lines up on your car as long as it gets a reading.

Re: Backwards Radar?

I am not sure about that either.

I have seen on a few occasions driving along the Great Ocean Road, the local cop in a Landcruiser sitting in the bushes facing the same way I am heading with the radar pointed straight into his mirror.
It must be able to work otherwise he wouldn't do it.

I'm sure it wouldn't work, as mirrors only work for light, and radar doesn't use lightwaves

Re: Backwards Radar?

I think that if he is pointing the gun at you (not through the mirror) then it would work fine and be totally legal. Doesnt the radar measure the speed at which your coming towards it? If so then it wouldnt matter which way the car is facing, as long as the radar is pointed towards you.

Re: Backwards Radar?

I'm not sure of what is happening here. In my observations Police often use LIDAR guns out the window of the vehicle and use the door as a rest for steadying. However, they are pointing the LIDAR forward. If you say they are in fact pointing the LIDAR backwards (using the trigger and pistol grip in reverse) and using the mirror for target identification this is totally against the rules. It would be able to be refuted in a court although as usual I've yet to meet a cop who won't purjor himself to make a conviction - imagine: "Yes your honor I was using my mirrors to verify the target vehicle".

Re: Backwards Radar?

Just as a point, radar waves are light, just not in the visible spectrum.

Re: Backwards Radar?

When coming back from Darwin into Adelaide I pulled over and asked the cop about the mirror thing. All he was doing getting an idea how fast you're going before you go past him, that way he didn't have to keep so alert I spose.

Then if you're going fast he zap you once past his car.

It looked like a lazy man's way of doing it

Re: Backwards Radar?

hehe that's funny. I can't think of much more boring than sitting on the side of the road zapping people.

Up here they do the training on a bridge at Mt gravatt that goes over the freeway. There is a bunch of trainee cops on the bridge zapping cars, which all slow down like it is a mega radar trap. Rather amusing to see!
