Battle for 4-door supremacy
It seems there is a battle brewing among manufacturers across the globe to build the Worlds fastest 4 door sedan.
For a long time the BMW M5 has been unofficially dubbed "the worlds fastest production sedan". Now I would be the first one to say that it would probabbly get creamed by a much lighter EVO 6 Lancer, but that's just me.
It seems as though everyone wants to get a piece of action as of late. The July Motor says in 18 months or so Subaru will use a TT Boxer 6 in a Liberty B4 STi. The Liberty B4 weigh's in at under 1500kg, so with AWD and about 280kw on tap, get set for a shaking.
The next incarnation of AMG's E55 is said to be powered by a detuned version of the SL55's Supercharged SOHC 5.4Litre V8. Aswell, the M5, which is due for a facelift by 2004, has been rumoured to be powered by a 500hp V10. The rumours seem to be have watered down a bit as of late, with a pesimistic, more conventional powerplant beeing used, said to be a revised version of BMW's 4.9 Litre Quad Cam V8. Power is said to be boosted by an extra 50hp atleast.
Jaguar and Audi are another two notable contenders, Jag with its 400hp supercharged engine and Audi with its 4.2Litre bi-Turbo S8 sedan. MG have also been linked to all this, borrowing a SUpercharged Version of the Mustantgs 4.6Litre Quad Cam V8, which is said to generate more than 400hp.
Australia hasnt gone unnoticed also, with HSV's GTS stating the trend. Ford has followed suit with the latest T-Series, powered by the 250kw/500nm stroked Windsor. Now we all know Ford have alot up thier sleeve, and a 300kw+ GTHO is not out fo the question. Just how good it will be, and how it will compare with HSV's upcoming VY GTS sedan, (which probably will have a power hike of around 30kw) and the rest of the notable contenders mentioned above, is a ones guess.
The only thing in front of us now is time. We will have to wait about 2 years to see what will transpire. The scene is set and the cars are just about ready to fire. I am most looking forward to what Ford have to offer, but I knoe they are in for a bit of stiff competition. What do you all think?
