Just thought I'd start a thread for discussion on what is the best 4x4... Only taking into account off road use here, not city or highway driving.
And for good measure why not have a poll as well.
I have a few preferences and thoughts, also some of them can be modified to be so much more capable as well.
If I had to buy one for off-roading it would be a GQ swb or an old 3 door Rangie, either way with a suspension lift, bigger tyres, more power, etc you have a real capable machine on your hands. For those of you who doubt the capabilities of the old Rangies, check out this: Outback Challenge For longer touring a lwb GQ or Cruiser 75 or 80 series would get the nod.
Anyway post away with your thoughts! I can add extra choices if necessary.
i voted for the fj 45, thats the only 4x4 we had that could do 6 Ft launches off cliffs lol....
the patrols was crap, due to the heavy 350 chev, our 60 serires was too long, and not high enough, friends f100 was toooooo wideeeee, best was the fj 45.... also my lil daihatsu scat.... was a mad little thing, used to spin all 4 wheels on ashfelt...

XE Fairmont Ghia... Silver/Grey Met over black, soon to be v8, cant wait till i get another v8, after 3 LONG HARD YEARS
Go to the Land Rover dealership in Port Melbourne for a ride around their off-road track the Range Rover outdoes the rest of the Land Rover range... and best of all, it's fun for free :-)
Defenders have shocking driving position and shocking seat layouts. Cruisers are probably the way, though a Patrol can pretty much do the same thing - the only thing that lets the GQ down is the rear diff clearance and stock fuel range.
100 Series gets complex with the diesels and the v8 as to what have a live front or independant too.
Im suprised that the 75 Series has not made an appearance, considering the amount of troopies used for commercial purposes.
Anyway, my vote goes to the Patrol because: A. It can pretty much do what the 100 does. B. Every man and his dog has a 100 series.
