My brother had his XG ute defected about a month ago for being too low. We measured the ground clearance that same day with the car sitting on level cement, and it was 105mm from his exhaust tip to the ground. This is the lowest point of the car and was still within the legal boundries. He complained but the cop that defected him just said that it was his opinion that it was too low.
Anyway, he had to get the car raised for work, so it now sits about a foot from the ground. He took it to the cop shop and they said that they don't have the personel to do the defect check here in town and he would have to wait for a guy to come down from the next town over. A month passed and my bro gave the inspector a call who said that he had forgotten about him. Another 2 weeks later he got a call and had to go and get it checked... So we put my car on blocks and put my mags and wheels on his car to get it off defect.
But this time they wanted to do a FULL check, so up on the hoist it went. The final report said that the parkers need replacing (they were green) ball joint were worn and the FLH bush was split. So they changed the minor defect to a major defect and the car is only allowed to leave his yard when he goes to get fixed. Stupid thing is, he has to produce the reciepts to show that all the parts that have to be replaced have to be brand new. He has to show reciepts for the part and to show that a professional fitted them... and that includes the parker globes also.
He's spewing because he is a fully qualified suspension specialist and can't do the work himself. They charged him $67.50 for the inspection, and the next one is going to cost him $77.50 because they have to drive 45minutes to get here.
Bullcrap!
Well, my car has it's wheels back, but now his is on blocks. the inspector even had the nerve to say that there was slight feathering on my tires... I only bought them a month back, they're brand new! B@ST@RDS!
Why cant he do the work himself, he does the work writes the reciepts and go and show them, if they dont believe him, and he HAS done the work as requested, then they will be able to check it and pass the car (may cause a big hassle and delay).
Closet I got to a defect, was pulled over for speeding, and got told to take the headlight protectors off that I had painted (illegal to change or restrict headlight beams or something), and the temp gauge I had on the cowl in front of the windscreen, was let go with a warning on that, did nothing, and never got pulled over again.

He's not allowed to do the work because he isn't a registered business or working for anyone who does suspension. He quit to help my parents out with their business.
He's going to argue and just produce reciepts for buying the parts and then fit them himself. It won't take long, it's just a pain in the arse trying to get them to let him do it.
Closest I got was Saturday night, they were gonna defect me for the sticker on my rear window, but I said that I can almost see straight through it (lie, but I can see past it.) They didn't check cause I had my new puppy sleeping in the backseat and I didn't want them to wake her up.
Here's a pic of what it looked like when it was lowered and before he got better mags and little green lights placed across the top of his rollbar. Surprisingly the inspector said nothing about having the little green lights there...
You can see the exhaust coming out just before the back wheel.
mmm i'd take it to a qualified exhaust place get a written statement saying how far off the ground (clearance)and take it to the traffic devision of your area give it to the OIC and tell him it aint right maybe they'll scrap the fine if not go to court..

cars are a lethal weapon, your not invinsible when you get into one,and no matter how much skill you think you have, you are never in control you are always on the edge of death it may not happen today but if you keep driving like you do,you too will end up dead!
dirty windscreen, u know that crappy rain u get and the whole car goes a brown/orange colour, i driving, coz i can still see out of it, the copper pulls me over, and does me for the windscreen, and my rear tyre... but i took it to a rwc place, and a tyre place, and they were all good, i aslo got a written statement form both, and took it to hte copa
MaD_WoG a cop can book you for dangerous driving if your windscreen is dirty, sounds far fetched but they can do it. i used to live next door to a cop before i moved, and some of the stuff they can fine/defect you is unbelievable, but most of these are used on smart arse's or people the police dont like
