OK heres a brief run down before I get started.

My gf went to france for 40 days, so while she was gone we upgraded her pre-paid account to a TEMPORARY/CASUAL account for just those 40 days. We accepted the $10 per month joining fee, as we only needed it for 2 months.

We also had to put down a $300 deposit, which was fair enough, so if she didn't spend it all we woudl recieve a cheque in the mail for the unused amount.

All was fine untill we recieved the bill when she got back. $293 was the first bill! Now, if this wasn't bad enough, we looked at the bill to find that the total amount of her calls (calling out) was $246. So, for me to call her while she was over there I had to buy $15 phone cards, which last for a whole 20mins! We look at the bill again and she has been charged just for picking up the phone! What kind of crap is that!

Now to top it off, we are a week late in paying it, our fault yes, and we are ok with that. BUT...yesterday we recieved more mail from telstra saying that we owe them on extra $187. There is no explaination other than under the pretext of "new charges".

Does anyone know what is going on? Im fuming about this and want to get all the ammo I can before walking into the telstra shop. So the the grand total for 40 days of a "temporary" account has come to $481!

NOT HAPPY JAN!! anyone got any advice?

well unfortunately, you have to usually pay roaming charges, which means yes you pay to call, and she pays to recieve, they are usually quite expensive as well, well you have found this out the hard way, she should have bought pre-paid phone cards and called you from any pay phone, very cheap that way, thats my wife (we weren't married then) did when she went overseas.

I hate telstra, they took me to debt collection for $8.something when i canx my account with them. $8?!? wtf?

That's how Telstra charges for International Roaming on a mobile :( What they "forgot" to tell you is that if someone in Aus dials your GF's number, they only get charged for a local mobile call - you're GF gets dumped with the international charges. Also, if ya GF calls people in france, you get charged some stupidly high rate (IIRC, when I went to Croatia, it cost more to call a local croatian number than to call back to Australia).

It took a lot of poking and prodding from me to find out all the costs for International Roaming when I went overseas - and when I found out the costs, I figured it was just better to buy a prepaid mobile account while I was there - worked out heaps cheaper.

I suggest you go over the bill to make sure that you're GF actually made those calls, and don't pay the $187 till you demand and recieve proper (itemised) bill from Telstra.
