Maybe you guys will be able to help me out and give me some of your thoughts.
I'm looking to buy a first car soon and I know I want either a Falcon XR6 or Fairmont Ghia EF/EL. I'm not really sure what to get as I really love the look of the XR6 but then again the Ghias have all the electronics "luxery" stuff although I prefer the XR6 body.
I was thinking maybe even a Futura would be better as that way I have more money to customize the thing myself.
I want to spend around $10-12k but really not sure what would be the best value. I'd love an EL over an EF but maybe the EF is better for a first car?
I'm really not sure as theres so much in the Ford range!
Give me some thoughts on what you guys think and maybe abit about your choices when buying new cars and what made you get what you have.
Thanks!
I like the EL Fairmont Ghia mate, look sweet dumped on their asses and got all the options. Either way your gonna be payin a sh*tload of insurance on any of those cars for a first.
Like BlueAU said, insurance will be a killer. Be sure to get some rough ideas how much it is going to cost you. Having said that, I am sure the XRs will be more expensive to insure. It might be worth considering a base model and slowly customising that if insurance is too much. And one more thing; I don't think you will get a decent EF/EL XR for that sort of money.

and the ef/l fairmont and ghias have the xr motor, difference is it just doesnt say XR on the rocker cover. my mates EF fairmont would eat my AU off the light but in total distance i would cath up and beat him though.

I'm sorta half serious about that though, the Ghia would be very nice inside and I love the look of them - very classy, but if you think its a bit grandpa-ish, my suggestion would be buy a GLi or Futura (just remem Futura has more specs), and add in the bits you want from the Ghia - the great thing about most Falcon parts is you can pretty much stick them on whatever model you like, as many here will tell (and show) you.
Insurance will absolutely cane you if you get an XR, so if you want one that badly, I'd buy a Futura and put the XR front on. With a few modifications to the engine (all of which will be ok by your insurance as long as they're legal), chances are you'll probably be putting out more than a stock XR anyway. So that may be one to think about?
That's pretty much the reason I bought my EF, i could have had a Fairmont but it had ugly mags and 200+ kms, whereas with my Futura I have a solid platform that I know has no faults or problems, and I can work on it to make it how I want to be. Futuras will be cheaper too, leaving you more money to get into that customising earlier!
