Car fridges

Does anyone have a recommendation of what would be a good car fridge? I'm a bit skeptical thermoelectric ones during summer as they usually have a 20° below ambient rating.

Are those armrest style ones worth bothering with at all?

Re: Car fridges

Value for money go for a Waeco, they are better than an Engle and cheaper, make sure you get one with a compressor as they will cool down to freeze no matter what the ambient temperature is, where as those thermolectric ones will only cool 20 c or so below the ambient temp. www.waeco.com.au

I think that the new Camry or Magna are pretty good fridges...

Re: Car fridges

Engle are the only ones I have had anything to do with and I must say they are reliable.
Girlfriend's dad has one that is 20 years old spent all of its life bouncing round in the cab of his truck in 40+ degree days and still works a treat.

Re: Car fridges

Thanks for the replies guys. That's basically what I thought about the thermolectric ones - during summer ambient 40°, fridge cools down 20° = 20° in the "fridge", no thanks.

Re: Car fridges

I've got a solid state Waeco one and whilst it will keep you sambos cool on a hot day dont be expecting to get an icy cold beverage out of it. I'd say 20 degrees below ambient was a tad optimistic actually. Go the compressor model.

Re: Car fridges

I have a Waeco thermolectric one. It's good for what I use it for. That is to sit on the passenger seat to keep my drink cool as I drive.

A compressor fridge is much better.

Try the http://www.fridgeshop.com/

They sell ex demo models. This is where I bought mine from and they are in good condition and quite cheap. They deliver usually overnight to most places.

Re: Car fridges

I've got an Engel. Will get to a below 0 temp in around 40 min, still, when its 40 outside it doesnt do as well as on a cool day, will still freeze in maybe an hour though, and you really have to keep it going or it will thaw out after not too long in the heat. Mines been bouncing around in my boot, its all bent, but the compressor is protected by a bit of metal so still works beaut! Mines worth about $1000. I thought it would have broken by now (for example i did around 1 km of snakies on a beach, had too much fun to think about the fridge hitting the side of the boot countless times!ouch, its very bent!).
I think Id go an Engel if you want it to last.
