I havent had experience transfering rego from one state to another but some friends have, both caars had ACT rego on them, one of them waited till the rego run out and had a full blue slip done on it, the other transfered his while it still had ACT rego and it was more like a pink slip + identity check. Both where done at the same place.

yes you will need a blue slip, from an athorised inspection station.
give the RTA a call, they will give you a list of a few stations near you. it will cost about $50, plus you will need to buy NSW plates, about $50 again. plus rego I guess.
My Car Came With Nsw Pinkslip But I Had To Get A Qld Blueslip To Change It Over Even Tho It Had Just Parst A Nsw Picksip

I'm not sure if it still is the same, but I used to work in Sydney after living in Brissy.I had my oldies send me the paperwork for the licence and rego renewels. From memory, $55=5years(QLD), $38=1year(NSW). And QLD is fully transferable between the states.
Now with the RWC side-of -things, my understanding is that you need a RWC(Blue or green slip, whichever equivelates), whenever you need rego renewel. QLD you only need it when you sell.
My advice is that if you can keep it in Brissy, do it.

Victoria, all you need is current rego papers, and they just give you Vic rego, 12 months payed on the spot, and you apply for a rego refund from the state the car was registerd in. Was very easy ;0)

SA is even easier, I've had to transfer both QLD and NSW rego's to SA, and all they do is a $22 Identity check, refund the other states rego and issue you with new rego, takes less than 30mins to transfer it to this state, a set of new plates is $22, haha most things at Transport SA cost $22....
