great point mr mkII, i never even thought of that 1....about there being more p platers in their own car because they cant cruise with their mates.....
same with the designated drivers...
the curfew is the easy "solution", its not the right one
A mates son done two years of car club driving a datty 1600 before he got his licence, and boy could he drive good, first car he got was a dunnydore turbo, and when he was on his own, very good, but put a couple of mates in, then add in a little bit of Jim Beam, then a little bit more Jim Beam, and walla, lost that licence TWICE in 3 weeks, now will be walking for 2.5 years.
So driver training courses can help but .........

Fact - It can happen in any car - there was a fatality down at Mosman near Xmas last year when a P plater (girl) rolled a convertible peugoet. Hell, it doesnt even matter if its a jap crap import, it can happen in a Falcon.
She hit the side of the road with the tyre the car rolled. Apparantly, they were looking for some house number at night.
As for the peer pressure thing, I have, for a long time, been considering getting a Ute Falcon instead of a sedan to avoid the problem of having some mates in the car with me. Only two seats, me + girl and no one else. Don't need to carry passengers.
Interesting points raised.
Obviously cars at Auction yards will not display 'P' plates as the personal items are removed before sale.
Powerful cars is a contributing factor, so is inexperience and speed. Unfortunally only one of the 3 is enforced and this is because it makes money.
When I was on my 'P's I was worried about driving my 351 XB, today kids fly past with a pffft every gear like I'm standing still.
It is easy to point the finger at 'P' plate drivers and make it apear as though something is being done. Instead of tackling the issues that cause motor accidents. Too many people drive cars they can't conrol and there are way to many unroadworthy cars out there. No tread does mean you have race tyres. Indicator lights are for indicating.

Why don't they do what they do to anyone who has a motorcycle. Restrict the size until after they pass the probation period. Stick em all into suzuki mighty boys I say.
nah, give them all those dodgy little 800cc russion lada's that top out at 70kph
but serioulsy, the way to control young drivers is engine power restrictions, anyone under 21 cant register, buy, take ownership, drive, any car over 4 cyclinders, and anything turbo charged, supercharged, or engine capacity modified...hell make it max 80KW in a 2,000kg body.....
but then again, there will still be idiots who can get themsleves into trouble in an 80KW powered shit box....and you will still get those who flout the laws and drive high powered cars anyway.....

Heard the crash when it happended as I live on Dandeong Rd. Friday and Saturday nights every week the 1/2 brain cell morons line up down at the Shell servo on the corner of Chapel St and Dandenong Roads and drag up and down Dandy road for hours. It's been going on since I lived there, yet no police have stopped them, the council has done nothing. And then the news reports of speeding P-platers and the same tired old speed kills message.
My message having listened to these guys racing 2 nights a week speed was only a minor factor in the accident the thing that killed them was out and out brain dead stupidity. And no amount of drver trainig will ever save a stupid person.

the way i see it is that its a fact of life, you stuff up, some ppl learn from it, some dont and some dont live to learn
Yeah but the last thing you want to do is kill some mates because of reckless driving. Most of these major double fatality accidents involving "young drivers" are not the drivers themselves.

putting a cap on passengers??? wouldnt that mean more p platers driving around since theycant cruise in da one car?
No, it should be with a "eggs in more baskets" approach. Nothing worse than getting a fire call to a triple fatality or quadruple fatality MVA.

like i said b4, you have to learn from mistakes, you dont make mistakes, how can you possibly learn anything
Mate, you couldn't kill a friend due to reckless driving then just live with it for the rest of your life as a mistake

I lost my licence twice in 1 week (yay, got it back today!), your friends son mustve gotten into an accident or something cause his suspension period was much longer than mine.
Gotta agree, booze and driving dosnt make a good mix, some lessons are learned the ahrd way...

Until they are treated as such by the licensing authorities and all drivers alike the appalling situation on our roads will continue. I am constantly amazed at how inconsiderate, obnoxious and underskilled drivers are and am amazed that more don't die because of it. Why - because we were all taught to pass the driving test - not taught how to drive. You went to a "driving school" to get your Ps didn't you? I did. I passed without a point loss - great job!! Did they teach me to drive - NO. This is where the problem is manifested. A young driver lost no points on the license test and then falsely believes he or she is a good driver - we all know this is wrong.
BTW - Speedweek this saturday - great coverage of Production Sports racing from EC in a legal and controlled manner!!!
