I had to amend the post, as 1632 is Australia wide, and 330 is Victoria bound.. so 72 out of 330 were P Platers.. in victoria..
- During 2003, there were 1632 deaths from road accidents in Australia.
Out of these 1632 deaths, 330 were victorians. Of these 330, there were 72 deaths from the age group of 18 - 25 year olds. Thats 21.81% of the total road toll, down from 26.19% in 2002.
If this is such an alarming problem amongst P Platers, how come there were 96 deaths of people aged between 30 and 49 (the EXPERIENCED drivers).
Just to pull you up on a statistical illusion, an issue with fatality rates displayed in statistics is that age bands tend to skew. For example 18-25 is 8 years, therefore if we pro-rate the number of fatalities over this age group 72/8 , then per age this is 9 drivers (ie 9 18yr olds died). Meanwhile, the higher bracket represents 20 years, therefore 96/20 gives us 4.8 driver fatalities per each year in this bracket.
Here are the fatality rates for under 25s for NSW and Victoria from ATSB
Yes, i realise that population size, bracket size, etc all play a part in the stats, as there may be alot more people aged between 30-49, than there is between 18-25, but the principal behind the stats is what i was getting at. If they are so much more experienced, how come they still die on our roads as well.
Could it be that unexpected things happen, or they drink and drive, or they speed as well? Wait, i thought P platers were the only irresponsible drivers on the road!

ANyone else notice how Premier Steve Tax is jumping on the complusory driver training idea? Too little, too late IMO. Hes out of here come election time.
what would driver training have done in that situation? they need not to know how to control the car but how not to act like assholes on the road.

Unfortunally with age drivers assume they can drive better due to having experience. This is not the case. Too many drivers develop bad habits and these contribute to accidents.
Money made on cameras need to go directly into driver education. Not just L and P plate holders. IMO, once your licence expires (10 or 3 years) then you should go on a refresher. This will continue until you are considered 'unsafe' to drive.
Unfortunally in my possition I see too many people try and tell me 'the way it is' or 'the way it should be' from experience. Fact of the matter these are people who think they know better than the law or simple don't know the law and made their own up!!

Power has nothing to do with how a car handles, driving irresponsibly is. I had just filled up the street sweeper today with water, and was coming down a slight decline to a round-a-bout, and because i was rushing (it was 4:05 and i finished at 4:15) i left my braking a bit too late and when laid on the pedal, the STREET SWEEPER kicked out sideways because of the water that spilled on the road and wheels. Sure it would have looked funny if you were behind me, but what if there was someone beside me!
As mentioned above, NOTHING will solve this problem. There is nothing that society can do. It's upto the individual to make the decision. Society has done all it can. The best society can do is enforce heavy penalties for reckless driving, and charging people with murder when they kill someone on the road while breaking the law, but still, these young people don't take any of this into account.
Of course society can do more. The simple part is realising that it has to be a compromise between the extremities of:
a) Let P-Platers drive anything they wish and do everything an unrestricted driver can do.
i know u said "what if someone was beside you" but i think even that person (if they were there) would see the funny side in a sideways street sweeper...after they got over the shock of being hit by 1
