Businesses and shoppers in Sydney's west are being warned to be on the lookout for counterfeit $50 notes circulating in the area.

Around 40 forged notes had been detected in various shops including food stores and licensed premises near the Parramatta railway station over the last two weeks, police said today.

Senior Constable Angela Dick said the counterfeit notes were made with unusual paper and were of poor quality.

"The hologram on the note is stuck on and of poor quality.

"The number 50 is missing from the hologram, and the small circle at the base of the note when held up to light shows a star in an incorrect position," Snr Const Dick said.

Parramatta police have appealed for anyone with information about the counterfeit money to contact them.

damn! i want one! they'll be worth a fortune 20-30 years down the track since most of the counterfeit notes are destroyed nowadays.
