Dude that is a horrible connection speed are you connecting to the net with a mobile or something?
Tell me:
1 what type of modem you have.
2 lenght of your extention cable
3 any buzzing on your line
4 your isp
5 if you have any double adapters remove them.
6 what os you have.

If you have 95/98/me
go to start>settings>control panel> modems> properties (no not f()k1nG dialing properties) >connections tab> advanced> and tell me if you have anything in extra settings.
if you have 2000/XP on your system
start>control panel>phone and modem options>modems tab> properties>advanced> and tell me what you have in there.

or just call your ISP cause either
1) your modem is an old junker,
2) your modem is f()ked!
3) you phone line is buggered
4) your settings are buggered.

Worst case scenario is that you're on a pair-gained line...in which case, you're basically screwed. dial-up internet would be really slow (ie 28.8) and there's no chance of getting broadband adsl, only cable if you're lucky enough to have it in your area.
do you usually get that kind of speed? or is it just a one off thing?

Hah with my new modem my connection fluctuates between 38.6 -42.6kbps. Hell i'll be happy if i can get 50kbps but i can never get it.
