A friend of ours has purchased a 2000 Land Cruiser 78 , the selling dealer says it has to be serviced at 10,000km by THEM, not any other dealer, looking through my Ford's manual, it says any dealer can service a vehicle provided it is an Authorised Ford Dealer, any comments???

Sound's suss to me, Just like the major manufacture's say that you have to take the car to an authorised dealer to keep the warranty,but you can take it to whoever you want like repco for instance and still maintain the warranty,just a way of making their money,call it a dealer revenue.

I think it depends on the warranty being offered.
If its a manufacturers warranty, you can get an authorised service centre to do it ( as long as they use recommended parts etc etc ).

However, if its a 2000 Cruiser, I'm guessing its out of (or real close to) manufacturers warranty, which leaves it in dealer / aftermarket warranty - which I think leaves you at their mercy. If it is an aftermarket warranty ( apart from the legally req'd 3 months ), check the fine print, heaps of them only cover a limited amount per claim ( e.g. gf's 2nd hand volvo was limited to $1,000 per claim - which could have sucked if a gearbox or something bombed ).

Worst case, get a copy of the warranty and call consumer affairs !

Had the same thing with a used 99 lancer we bought from a holden dealer, had to take to them every 10k and cost 180 a service, in order to keep it covered under warranty, well that was in NSW, we moved to melbourne and that was the end of the warranty, so never mind, never had a problem anyway.
