confused Decisions Decisions Decisions

Hi All.

New job.
More money.
Lots more tax.
Need to "salary-sacrifice" for a car.

Can't decide whether to wait for the Barra (and get a base model "Forte" or something) or just get a runout AUIII at a much better price or go for a higher model AUIII runout for the same price as a new Barra.

Alternatively I could get a 3yo Fairlane Ghia with V8 and leather for the same price. Or even a runout AUIII XR8. So many cars, so little patience....

I'll be caning the thing up and down the freeway every day doing like 500kms/wk minimum, so an 8 would be great, I'm more interested in comfort and sound system than pure get-up-and-go. A 175kw V8 would be much better than a 120kw I6, so the XR8 is probably over the top.

What would y'all do in my situation?

Errrrrrrrrrrrrr 120kw Inline 6 thats back in the days of Cfi mate in 1992. Base model falcons since EF days are 157Kw buddy.

XR6 has a choice of 164kw HP and 172kw VCT.

If you don't mind me asking how much are you planning spend?

A runnout AUIII sounds the go to me. You have to make the decision about V8 or 6 based on running costs I guess. A V8 probably wouldn't use much more than 6 if driven sensibly but the catch is the more power you have the more you tend to use (eh AP & Laminge ??!!) then your fuel economy goes .

id love to have your dilema!!!

IMO i would get one of the following:

AUIII XR6
AUIII XR8
AUIII Fairmont V8

The first thing you probably need to decide is whether you want a 6 or an 8. Do you pay for fuel yourself or have a company fuel card? Its hard because they are all great cars! If you want a V8, but more worried about options than grunt, then go the fairmont i reckon.

But if you want a 6, then go right past the forte and buy the XR6 - the best 6 cylinder around IMO

XR_Strider_GuY,

The 120kw refers to my current XF EFI. I meant that buying a basic 6 or 8 (non-Tickford) will be a huge improvement for me, so I don't really want a Tickford. I'd rather go the luxury options in the Fairmont/Fairlane.

I'm working out the details at the moment with the car arrangement, but I'd be prepared to go as high as 40 I think. In the second hand market 30 will be my limit.

I don't give a rats about fuel economy between 6/8. I think a fairmont V8 AUIII is a good option Tickford2001.

Other options - Subaru WRX, Nissan 200SX or similar. But these are getting into mid 40's territory.

Bring_Back_XF,

Sorry for the mis-understanding about the 120kw.

A V8 Fairmont does sound good, A Fairmont makes a good daily driver and with a V8 coupled with an auto it's even better.

My opinion is to take an XR out for a test drive before you put your money on a fairmont, truust me you won't be disappointed.
Hmmm from the price ranges you posted i think a near new AUII/AUIII XR6 HP would do you just fine. :s3 :s3 :s5 :s5
