The notebook is for general word processing, photo and dvd editing, internet surfing and some gaming. Which one has the quickest processor and is the best value?
The pentuim m 1.6GHz centrino is a new model called a 510m which is compact and lightweight.
The p.4 3.0GHz with HT Tech is an older more bulky unit called the 5150

Go with the second one mate, not only is it cheaper but it is more powerful. With a 32mb graphics card you wont be playing many games though. As far as it being a "bulkier" unit as compared to the newer model i cant imagine it being too bulky and unless you want to carry it in the back of your jocks being slightly bigger wouldnt make too much of a difference.
The P4 will chew through you battery a lot quicker than a centrino. I have had both for work and I have found the centrino a better unit due to it being slim and the longer battery life. It is down on power from the P4 which is the only draw back I have found.

I did option the 12cell batt on the p4 rather than the std 6cell, would this not compensate for that?
Yeah go the second one I recon, but see if ya can upgrade that video card to a 64mb geforce, that means you will be able to play counterstrike online............yeah what a game that is.

I faced a similar choice when I went to upgrade from my previous Dell Inspiron (that was quite a heavy bugger). At the time I went for the second option because the Pentium M gains its battery endurance through conserving processor speed, which to me is useless when my notebook spends most of its time plugged into power anyway.
I also carry mine around a bit as well, and it is a noticeable reduction in weight over the previous Inspiron notebook that I had.

The 12cell battery will compensate for this for the most part it will still suck through the battery. I would expect about 3 1/2 hours max of normal use (word processing, surfing etc) with the 12cell batt. Games I wound not want to have a guess. I get 4 1/2 hours out of my standard battery under normal useage, under high load it drops to about 3 hours. Now it is down to Size & weight Vs Power.
I like the centrino as it is thiner and much lighter than the P4. Just for the fact that I have to lug it around everywhere with me.
Get the Pentium M. Pentium M is the fastest home-user processor on sale at the moment. At 1600MHz, it outperforms the Athlon XP3200 and Pentium 4 3200MHz. The second one is bigger, and slower.
