I am originally from Michigan...I grew up in a town called Kalamazoo...Been to Detroit many times...OMG what a shame they let these Historical Landmarks go down the Shitter...But Detroit has been going to a Ghost town for years.
Michigan's Economy is Crap!!, and I realized it years ago...That's why my Family Moved to Wisconsin Back in 2000, and I have no regrets...Alot of my family still live in that depressed State, and Refuse to go anywhere else.
Hell they have a 6.5% sales taxes...Cigarettes cost over $7.00 a Pack...They charge you 10 cents extra for a deposit on a can of Soda...You pay outrageous License fees for you car ... Based on weight of vehicle, and the Fair market selling price of the car... which runs $100.00 to $200.00 for License plates...You have a Mandatory Insurance Law with very high Limits...other $700.00 to $1,000.00 to insure "ONE VECHICLE" God almighty you pay a 20% sales taxes just to stay in a Hotel...and in Detroit you pay an additional 5% tax...
No wonder the state is losing People, and going Bankrupt

Didn't realise how bad things were in Detroit till reading about it recently . This account of the decline in population is staggering ,
Exodus from Detroit
Racial unrest in 1967 contributed to a shift of the white population out of downtown Detroit. Many moved to the suburbs. The city's population shrank in the '70s and '80s as jobs were lost to competition from Germany and Japan. Jobs on the edge of town could only be reached by people who owned a car. Modern achievement became an existential problem.
By then the good times were over for this once-fêted metropolis of modernity. Within half a century Detroit lost almost a million people, or half of its population. Many inner city buildings, including the United Artists Theater and the majestic train station, were abandoned. When the last tenants moved out of some apartment blocks, the heating was simply turned off and the electricity disconnected. Water leaked into the empty buildings, frost cracked the walls and columns, and the window panes shattered. The result is an almost gothic vision of decline.
Thirty-five per cent of the inner city has become uninhabitable.
Re . costs ( non smoker now for 25 yrs +)
pack of 20 B&H King size £6.46 = 10.34 US dollars
unleaded petrol / gas per litre £1.30= 2.08 US dollars

Here in Oregon, we have no sales tax on anything. License plates are $54 for 2 years, they don't have one year plates. Our weather is pretty good year around. I'm glad I'm not in Michigan. Most of my family lives there though. Near Traverse City.
